The 4-Step Routine to a More Productive Workday

Many of us claim we’re consistently busy. But are we just surrendering to laziness and sloth?

Often, we confuse ‘busy’ with being productive—two very different things.  I am particularly guilty regarding this matter.  I habitually harp on about how busy life is at the moment, but whether I’m being truly productive comes precariously into question.

I learned recently that all that’s really required in order to be more productive is a simple shift in attitude. After all, heightened productivity does wonders for your wellbeing, encouraging us to feel more content at the end of the day with a potent sense of accomplishment. Furthermore, when we begin to utilize our time and resources judiciously, success is bound to follow. Here at Style Salute, we’ve been following Mark Zuckerberg’s four tips for being a productive powerhouse, which numerous successful people have adopted into their daily customs. Take notes, ladies!

Ready to get stuff done? Scroll down for 4 ways to a more productive workday.

FOCUS ON YOUR WORK AND AMBITIONS 24/7

In a Q&A on Facebook, Zuckerberg asserted that he spends around 50-6o hours a week in the office, but thinks about the Facebook mission every minute of every day. Whether it’s in terms our career or running errands for the day, if we continuously think about what our next steps should be and how we’re going to go about doing them, we’re going to achieve so much more out of our day. In this sense, to-do lists really do work. Write one every morning, outlining all you wish to accomplish by the end of the day, and stick with it.

SET ANNUAL GOALS

Zuckerberg has a variety of interests besides his career, which he admirably takes upon himself in a disciplined manner. For example, in 2010, he sought to learn Chinese, and on a Facebook community page back in 2015, he announced he was aiming to read a new book every two weeks. Setting out tangible goals and furthering any hobby is a simple step towards diligence and discipline, which are then smoothly applied in the workplace.

START EASY TO FINISH STRONG

used to think getting the harder tasks done first before finishing with easier ones was cunningly strategic. In other words, I’d use up all my brain power trying to muscle through mind-boggling stuff, only to then be frazzled with zero willpower to complete the rest of my day’s work. In his book, Mark Zuckerberg: 10 Lessons in Leadership, Michael Essany quotes the social media mogul as declaring, “I think a simple rule of business is, if you do the things that are easier first, then you can actually make a lot of progress.” This makes perfect sense. If we stick to this, we’re going to have enough momentum in the day to keep moving forward without feeling completely frazzled.

KEEP YOUR EMPLOYEES MOTIVATED AND SHARP

Zuckerberg runs an exceedingly tight ship, according to Noah Keegan, a past employee at Facebook. In account of his time at Facebook, Keegan claims Zuckerberg once threw water over an employee’s computer when a demo didn’t work, and allegedly threatened to use a fake samurai sword to decapitate anyone who took the site down. While we don’t advocate such aggression, we do however agree that a leader should keep his team inspired and driven. Make it clear to your employees from day one that you expect nothing but high quality. But if the work’s not up to par, we suggest refraining from hurling any kind of beverage over it.

You’re Instantly Less Likable at Work If You Do This

Likeability is an interesting topic. While it seems childish to want to be “likable,” it really isn’t. Truth be told–being likable (or not likable for that matter) actually has a huge impact on your happiness, career, and relationships. In fact, research shows shows the benefits of being likable go beyond the feel-good factor. Studies indicate that happy people tend to be more productive, creative, connected, and likable. Who wouldn’t want that? Naturally, we all want to be likable, so we want to drop all the habits we have that bring our likeability factor down. How do we do this? So what exactly brings down our likability? According to Quartz, one of the main things we do that drops our likeability quotient immediately is name-dropping. While we might think we’re being strategically savvy by incorporating a good old name-drop when networking, backfires almost always. Instead of appearing well connected or sincere, we come across as superficial. The use of name dropping to boost our appeal to others is an acquitted crime that most of us have committed at least once in our lives. And, we’re not that, ladies. W. Keith Campbell, a University of Georgia psychology professor, claims that when we name-drop, it’s through an itching desire to look good to others, all in an attempt to enhance our own self-esteem. We feel the need to do it so as to make up for our lack of expertise in comparison to people who we think are more proficient in this respect. However, Campbell asserts that when we fall into this terrible habit, we’re sending the message that we’re measuring our self-worth by means of our relationships with other special or high-status individuals. Interviewing for a new job? Networking? Almost everyone can see through humble-bragging–and you end up leaving almost the opposite effect than what was intended. Fortunately, we did some research on the topic–and if you want to boost your likeability quotient when networking, drop the bragging and adopt a few of the below habits.

1.BE ENGAGED

Instead of name-dropping, be engaged and focus on whoever it is you’re talking to. Be authentically interested in the conversation, and share more about yourself. Should you feel a little uncertain of yourself, Fessler suggests simply asking a question in order to keep the conversation flowing.

2. THINK ABOUT ICE-BREAKERS

Speaking of asking questions, it’s a good idea to think of ones you wish to ask ahead of time. This is a good idea for those of us who may be introverted and find the idea of starting a conversation mildly daunting. If you can, find out who’ll be attending the event so you can learn a little about them via their LinkedIn or Google accounts, which should help you draft your questions.

3. KNOW THAT YOU MIGHT NOT GET ON WITH EVERYONE – AND THAT’S OKAY

Christina DesMarais, a contributor at Inc.com, suggests managing your expectations before any networking event. Understand that not everyone you meet will get on with you, nor will you get on with them. Consequently, you don’t have to worry about trying to impress every single person in the room. Always remember that just one or two quality conversations are far better than twenty or thirty trivial ones.

4. GIVE EVERYONE AN EQUAL CHANCE

When networking, it’s important not to discredit anyone with a title you may not necessarily be interested in. While we’re often tempted to talk to more established, high-ranking people, it can serve us well to listen and engage with everyone, as they may end up providing something valuable to take away from the conversation.

5. FOLLOW-UP AFTER

A lot of people are guilty of attending networking events but rarely keeping in touch with the people they meet after. Make sure to follow up after meeting someone with a polite email, or by simply connecting with them on LinkedIn – it really makes a difference and leaves a lasting impression.

Tech Journalist Jessica Naziri Shares Her Favorite Wearables

Let’s face it, whether we like it or not, technology is taking over our lives–and while some may choose to run or avoid it, at Style Salute we agree it is rather best to embrace the digital age that we live in. Wearables have very much reached cool status in the celebrity and street style world (who could forget seeing Beyoncé wearing an Apple Watch Edition with a gold link bracelet?). Seeing how specific wearables come in and out of style and how others reach instant cult status over night is always interesting, and since wearables are arguably just as much about efficiency as they are about fashion, we wondered which products really are best for us.

To help us navigate the world of wearables, we connected with tech journalist and entrepreneur, Jessica Naziri, to share her favorite of the moment tech toys and why they’re great. “Wearables are definitely a must-have for the fashion-forward, tech savvy girl who doesn’t want to stare at her phone all day long,” says Jessica. “We all have busy lives and having a ring that notifies us of phone call or a bracelet and reminds us of our upcoming meeting can life easier.” Simple enough! As women who enjoy having more time on our hands, we think she’s spot-on. So, whether you’re a wearables guru or a complete tech novice, everyone can benefit from a few new tech toys.

The Feminine Trend That’s Going To Be Huge In 2017

Florals for spring are a given, and while the feminine print may not be anything new on the fashion scene, the message it’s sending this season is. Fashion girls everywhere are wearing florals this season signaling a sartorial statement of solidarity with the resistance movement—a symbol of strong femininity amidst growing support for women’s rights. Florals were worn by a slew of attendees during fashion month, and celebrities like Blake Lively have been draping themselves in it as of late.

In a recent NY Times article, Katie Rogers candidly talks about the historic role of fashion in feminism: “For American women, clothing has always provided a means of visual resistance, beginning with those who believed in dress reform, or the right to wear pants, in the 1800s. At the 1963 March on Washington, hundreds of black women opted for denim, overalls and natural hair, resisting sartorial protocol and rejecting expectations. When women showed up at the polls in pantsuits last November, they were not only referring to activists of the past but expressing their support for the first female presidential candidate nominated by a major party.” It is pretty clear that fashion is a feminist issue, and using fashion as a means of self-expression is just one way to get involved in the movement. What makes floral different this year than in previous seasons is that stylish women are wearing it as a statement piece. 2017’s florals are bright and bold, against darker and solid backings. Even Anna Wintour was spotted in Paris wearing florals!

#GirlSmarter: Every Woman (and Man) Needs to Watch These Empowering Ads

For all of us women, as sisters, colleagues, friends, mothers, and daughters, it’s urgent to empower one another–and to support the forces that are forging the mission to equality. The recent Women’s March that took place on January 21, 2017 was meant to unite women–and it clearly authenticated the demonstrable change that can be made when we all come together. So why now? Why is there so much activity stirring around women’s empowerment today?

According to Google Trends, the way we as women spend our time online is changing. “Women are asserting their right to preserve their personal passions online, and they certainly don’t conform to stereotypes.”  YouTube wanted to understand what women of working age (that would be us) are watching on YouTube–and which ads are resonating with us.  In their research, they uncovered three key trends: a significant increase in watch time of business-focused content; a desire to continue learning outside of work through how-to videos; and a preference for advertising that empowers viewers.  Looking deeper, YouTube found that the time women spent watching entrepreneurial videos on YouTube more than doubled year over year.  That suggests that we’re looking at a generation of self-starting women entrepreneurs (Yasss).

And the underlying global forces are listening. Brands like the feminine hygiene company Always are adopting a counterpoint narrative in order to increase girls’ confidence by encouraging girls to “Keep Playing #LikeAGirl.”  As cultural insight mavens, we see something fundamental taking place.  Some people are calling it the Fourth Wave of Feminism.  Fed up with everyday sexism and forged by other forms of activism, women are empowered by social media and other communications technologies. They are speaking up across all sectors, countries, and societies,” according to Forbes.

On that note, smart brands are also in on the conversation by celebrating womanhood in their ads.

Watch these empowering ads by brands that are taking up the cause and then head over to here to shop feminist fashion pieces you are going to love.

The Habit You Thought Was Good for You, and How to Stop Doing It

When she’s not in a courtroom, mindfulness expert and attorney, Mona Tashroudian, shares her healthy living secrets in our “Ask a Mindfulness Expert” column. Come back the second Monday of each month for Tashroudian’s actionable tips to help you on your journey to becoming your healthiest, happiest self.

If you’re looking to be more efficient and happy in your life, there’s absolutely one habit you have to kick: multitasking. We’re all guilty of it: Texting while walking, getting dressed while on the phone, writing an email to a colleague during a meeting.

In attempts to “create” more time in our lives, we all try to multitask. For example, at work, I am guilty of drafting an email to one person, while talking on the phone to another (this is really tricky), and at home, I simultaneously cook while washing the dishes (this is even trickier). When performing these multitasking activities, my heart is slightly racing, and I am not in a place of being present or peaceful. I am not giving whoever is on the phone my best self, nor am I drafting a meaningful email, or cooking dinner with love. But hey, the more I do, the better of a human being I am, right? Well, not really.

A new study from researchers at Stanford University shows that multitasking is not nearly as efficient as we like to believe, and it can even be harmful to our health. The science is simple: When you try to do two things at once, your brain lacks the capacity to perform both tasks successfully. As a result, your brain slows down and neither task is performed at its optimal potential. In other words, the more you multitask, the lower the quality of your work. In addition to making you less productive, multitasking also lowers your IQ (yes, really).

A study from the University of London found that participants who multitasked during cognitive tasks experienced IQ score declines that were similar to what they’d expect if they had smoked marijuana or stayed up all night. So by trying to multi-task you not only are feeling flustered; you may very well also be damaging an area of your brain that’s critical to your future success.

What’s really driving us to multitask in the first place? A false idea that every task is urgent and deserving of immediate attention. Sure, we are capable of doing multiple things at one time. However, research shows that the prefrontal cortex is only able to focus on one thing at a time, and by trying to perform multiple tasks at one, the brain is exhausted because the brain has a natural recovery rate when jumping between tasks. So, what do we do? With an influx of social obligations, social media, and life commitments constantly tugging at our figurative pant-legs, it’s hard to stay present and do things one-by-one. But, it is possible.

Below, I’ll walk you through three key life rules to follow so you can stop multitasking and start rethinking the way you live your life. Take note: These seemingly easy-to-do habits can help you live a more productive, happier, and healthier life.

Establish an email and text message-checking schedule.

Personally, this is my biggest problem. I very often feel the need to be “super-responsive” to emails and text messages, even the not-so-urgent ones. For example, while driving in the morning, I feel an urge to immediately respond to a friend’s text of “yoga at 7 tonight?” even though 7 p.m. is about 10 hours away. When I noticed I was doing this, I started setting a schedule for myself for when to respond to messages, and it has worked so well. Setting up boundaries between you and your electronics will make you more productive, happier, and less stressed.

Break your tasks into chunks of time.

Make a list of what needs to be done, and schedule it throughout your day, in meaningful chunks of time, about 30-40 minutes. If it’s an item that requires more than 30-40 minutes, schedule it throughout your day, as many times as you need. When you know you only have a limited amount of time to do something, you’re usually more likely to stay focused on the task (and not waste 45 minutes scrolling through random people’s vacation pictures on Facebook or Instagram).

Be mindful of your multitasking.

I get it, sometimes it is necessary to do two things at once. But, start paying attention to when it really is necessary versus when you think it is necessary. For example, it’s not necessary to respond to a non-urgent text from a friend while driving, but it is completely necessary to take a phone call from your child’s school while you are drafting a work memo. Also pay attention to how often you multitask, and what emotions arise while you’re multitasking. Do you feel rushed, anxious, worried, stressed? When you become aware, stop, take a deep breath in, and prioritize what is most important to do in that moment. After you pick that one thing, focus on it as if it’s the only thing you have do for that day. Check in again with your feelings, do you still feel rushed, anxious and worried? Usually, these feeling subside.

Have a question on how to be healthier and happier? Readers can submit questions via Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #SSAskTash.
