Did you know that your gut communicates with your brain? There definitely exists within us a “gut-brain connection”, which is largely responsible for the gut-feeling we often get, or most people often talk about. Sometimes, however, our habits get in the way of allowing our guts to properly speak to our brains.
One the biggest habits that affect our gut-brain communication is the food we eat since, after all, food goes directly into our gut. When we eat foods that are not so good for us, communication is inhibited between the two and the resulting feelings can vary. Some people experience brain fog, a change in their mood, trouble focusing, or feeling down/depressed. Most people don’t realize it, but the food is medicine and what put into our bodies is constantly feeding our brains—and it’s not just the kinds of foods you are eating, but when and how much.
For example, a dairy-filled ice cream cone. At the moment, eating this type of food can feel extremely satisfying. But for most, especially those with unknown dairy sensitivities, 20 minutes post-ice cream cone can feel nothing short of literally gut-wrenching. Same example, but pretend this time you had an ice cream cone, a pretzel, and a slice of pizza in the span of one hour (sounds like a day at the fair). Your stomach may be full and uncomfortable, and you might ask yourself why you ate so much. Soon, you feel sluggish and tired.
It’s more than easy to mindless eat in the modern day—with busy lives, hectic schedules, and the temptation of unhealthy food in pretty, convenient packaging. But, if you learn to apply mindfulness to eating, and pay attention to your various eating habits (what, when and how much), you will notice the type of food, amount, and eating times that make you feel like your optimal self, versus when you do not.
I personally went years (and still have moments) where I was eating relatively healthy, but the amount and timing were wrong, or even the type of healthy foods was wrong. It took me quite a while to learn to link my eating to how I was feeling. It wasn’t until I was exposed to “mindful eating” that I began to take notice of how foods were affecting me and making me feel, or how eating too late or too much made me feel pretty downright bad. Now, I pay attention to what I am eating, when and how much. As a result, I eat a plant-based diet with very minimal dairy, am mindful of my portions, and try to not eat past 6 p.m. (this one gets hard on weekends and with a husband who eats dinner late).
If you suffer from an upset stomach, lethargy, moodiness or discomfort following a meal, maybe it’s time you become more mindful of your eating habits.
Below are 3 tips to incorporate mindful eating into your life, for a happier and more vibrant you.
1) See, Smell, and Save Your Food
See and smell your food. In doing so, acknowledge, just very briefly, where this food came from. Acknowledge the time and energy that went into preparing it (when by you, or someone else). Then, take small bites and chew slowly so you can really taste your food. It’s amazing the flavors you’ll notice when you eat slowly instead of scarfing down your food. Because you have to eat, you might as well eat foods that keep your metabolism at its peak. We’re rounding up 15 of the best metabolism-boosting foods you can add to your grocery list. Read on to find out what they are.
2) Stop When You’re ¾ Full
This one requires testing your body out and really learning to listen to your body. Even if you are not sure you are full, take a break for 15 minutes and if you’re still hungry, then eat a bit more. It takes about 15 minutes for our stomachs to tell our brains we are full, so wait a bit. Avoid eating until your pants don’t fit (unless it’s Thanksgiving), and you will feel much more energetic and just overall better.
3) Post Eating, Listen to Your Body
This tip, to me, is the most important. I went for years not realizing I was sensitive to many foods simply because I became accustomed to a stomach ache or discomfort after eating. I am not sure how it happened, but one day I began to feel how bad I felt after eating certain foods. If you do notice discomfort after a meal or snack, make a mental or actual note of what you ate, and notice if you feel the same next time you eat the same food(s). This may provide insight into a food sensitivity you had no idea you ever had, all because you trained your brain to ignore the feelings of discomfort. I hope you can try incorporating these 3 mindful eating tips when you have your next meal, and because you have to eat, you might as well eat foods that keep your metabolism and gut health at its peak— so I’m rounding up 15 of the best gut-boosting foods you can add to your grocery list.

How to Nail Alicia Keys’ No-Makeup Look Using This One Product
Leaving the house without makeup seemed like the impossible until we watched Alicia Keys rock the ‘no-makeup look’ for almost an entire year. Last June, Keys wowed the media when she ditched the foundation, blush, and eyeliner, and went all natural. We must say, from every Hollywood appearance to Instagram selfie, she looked absolutely fierce.
Wanting to be bare-faced beauties too, we tapped Dotti, Keys makeup artist, to find out exactly what she used on Keys’ skin to achieve the glowy, natural, no-makeup look. The answer: Vita Liberata’s Self-Tanning Anti-Age Serum, a luxurious serum packed with organic botanicals and delivers a made-to-measure, natural-looking tan.
“When Alicia comes to me for makeup, I always work on bringing the texture of her skin to the front. I just enhance what she brings to me,” says Dotti. ” Instead of using foundation, we use Vita Liberata’s Self-Tanning Anti-Age Serum —it’s great when you love your skin but you want to add that hue of life to it. It just makes the skin look more alive—it gives a tan, but in a very natural way.”
All it takes is a drop of the product into your regular moisturizer (or applied directly to the skin), and you’ll notice a natural-looking tan, reduced fine lines and wrinkles and plumped, conditioned skin. You choose how light or dark you want to glow, making it totally easy to match to the color of your skin and avoid any unevenness. Also, for those days when you want to rock the makeup look, just use Vita Liberata’s Self-Tanning Anti-Age Serum as a makeup primer.
Already huge fans of Keys empowering personality, the “no-makeup movement” has especially inspired us to own the woman inside. If Keys fearlessly appeared in front of millions on, The Voice, only in a face with Vita Liberata’s Self-Tanning Anti-Age Serum, there’s no reason to fear going a day or maybe even a week without opening your makeup drawer. As cheesy as it sounds, we are all uniquely beautiful – go embrace you. No filter needed.
Click through for a step-by-step guide on mastering the no-makeup makeup look using Vita Liberata’s Self-Tanning Anti-Age Serum.
Create a Clean Canvas:
Before applying the product, wash and exfoliate your face well. Before applying the Anti-Age Serum, Dotti usually does a mask on Keys to get some moisture in the skin. Dotti tells Into The Gloss that she uses a lip treatment from Éminence—it’s three steps, so it’s nice to do if we have time. Éminence also has a nice rosehip mask that she’ll do, or she’ll do a SK-II mask.
Mix the Product:
Add 1-3 drops of the Self-Tanning Anti-Age Serum product to your normal facial moisturizer and then wash hands. For a deeper tan, apply neatly to the skin.
Use with Makeup:
You can also use the Self-Tanning Anti-Age Serumas a primer serum applied straight to the skin.

Hands Down, These Are the Best Products to Prolong Your Summer Tan
There’s no denying the confidence-boosting endorphins of radiant and glowy skin, no matter the season. That’s where tanner’s come in that can help prolong your summer tan.
To find out the best way to keep my glow all year round, I reached out to Clara Anderson, ambassador for Vita Liberata, the brand behind Alicia Keys “no-makeup” look (Keys wears Vita Liberata Anti-Aging Skin Serum ($45) and now I can’t live without it). According to Anderson, the secret to a year-round healthy glow is (drumroll please): The right mixture of products used properly—and, luckily, now that tanning formulas are more advanced than they ever were, there are plenty of skin-nourishing benefits to be had as well. Vita Liberata’s line of luxurious self-tanners goes beyond ordinary tanning formulas to treat your skin.
Created to work overnight and prolong your glow and packed with organic botanicals and a unique Moisture Lock™ system that draws water to the skin’s surface, all of Vita Liberata’s products are quick-drying, odor-free. providing spa-worthy hydration and a beach-bound goddess glow all year long.

“To guarantee a flawless application, always exfoliate skin before applying body makeup. This helps to remove any dead skin cells and creates a smooth base for application. I recommend that my clients use our Super Fine Skin polish ($30) the day before an event – dry brushing also stimulates circulation which in turn promotes healthy and glowing skin,” says Anderson.
Self-Tanning Anti-Age Serum
“If you’re looking to add some color to your complexion, just add a few drops of self-tanning anti-age serum into your regular moisturizer, or directly onto your face. With ingredients like essential vitamins, fatty acids, cucumber, beta-carotene, and Matrixyl 3000, wrinkles will be the last of your worries—you will stay oh so beautiful forever. Plus, it can substitute for a foundation or powder—giving you the same bronze without the extra makeup.
Need some inspiration? Alicia Keys used self-tanning anti-age serum during her “no makeup-look” phase, and she looked beyond flawless.
pHenomenal Tanning Mousse
“pHenomenal Tanning Mousse ($54) and Tanning Mitt ($6) are a must-have for flawless looking skin and natural, healthy glow,” Anderson tells me.
“The fast-absorbing mousse formula gives instant natural bronzing and develops to a deep, natural-looking tan. pHenO2 technology encourages a tan that lasts up to four times longer than regular tans with a patch-free, perfect fade. I recommend applying it with the Tanning Mitt to ensure fast and easy, streak-free application and a natural-looking result, and I promise when used properly (apply 3 times, leaving each layer to develop for 6-8 hours) you will stay golden for 2-3 weeks. Regardless of your natural skin tone, choose Fair for a subtle glow, Medium for a golden bronze, and Dark for a deep tan.” What I love most is that all the products are packed with organic botanicals and the moisture locking technology gives 72-hour hydration to nourish skin and maintain your tan for longer. Plus odor remove technology means there’s no fake tan smell.

10-Minute Tan
There’s no need to set aside time in your busy schedule to bake in the sun because, with a mother of 10-minute tan lotion, your body will be golden in no time. “Ten Minute Tan delivers a perfect, natural-looking, golden tan in as little as six hours with absolutely no risk of transfer,” says Anderson. Vita Liberata’s advanced organic technology uses Matrixyl 3000 Peptide Complex to plump and conditions the look of skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and supporting natural collagen production. Vitamin C from neroli, and omega oils from rosehip further lock in moisture for rich hydration and the look of smoother, more radiant skin. This organic formula uses proprietary patented Odour Remove™ technology so there is no self-tan odor.”
Anderson says that for best results, always make sure your skin is exfoliated. Then, use a tanning mitt or your hands, rub the products into your skin, wait 10 minutes, rinse, and within 4-6 hours you will be radiant. It’s no wonder Ten-Minute Tan ($34) is Amazon’s best-selling bronzers

6 Ways The Most Successful Women Gain Confidence at Work
Ever heard of the work achievement gap? That’s the one where women lag behind their male peers professionally for no reason other than their gender. Maybe that plumb project goes to John and not Jenny, and so John gets the next promotion, and then the raise. Believe it or not, this is way more common than you think. And it’s why there are fewer women than men in the C suite, despite plenty of talent. Sure, some of this is good old-fashioned gender bias. And that won’t be eradicated for some time. But there are action steps we can take to close this gap.
Ahead, here’s how you can achieve the career success that you want — and deserve.
GET LOTS OF FEEDBACK
There’s a gender gap in feedback; men still hold more positions of power and are less likely to give feedback to women. (Would you believe me if I told you they give us less feedback because they are afraid we might cry? Well, that’s true. Sort of weird, but true.)
So, to overcome this, ask for feedback…all the time. Ask, ask, and ask again. From your boss, from your colleagues, from the people who work for you. Maybe the first time, your colleague will say “Hey, you’re doing great.” But by the fifth time, the helpful feedback starts to come out.
Still not getting the feedback you need? Then try this: list three things you know you need to work on and ask if (s)he’d share insight on one of them. This is much more likely to get you past “Don’t change a thing, you’re doing a great job.”
NETWORK / “PLAY IN TRAFFIC”
Networking has been called the #1 unwritten rule of success in business. And in fact, so much of success can come back to who you know. Yet somehow it seems that while the guys all get the memo on the importance of networking, we women are still more focused on trying to prove ourselves at work; just like we did when we deserved that An in 8th-grade Algebra. Do not underestimate the value of who you know. In part because your next business opportunity is more likely to come from a loose connection than a close connection. (Trust me on this one; loose connections are how I met the women from whom I acquired Ellevate Network, and it’s how I met my co-founder at Ellevest.) And by networking, we’re not talking about schmoozing, but exchanging ideas, learning new things, and learning about business developments you wouldn’t otherwise hear about. Sure, you can do this on your own (a lot of powerful networking happens informally) and should always maintain your own personal network. You can also join ready-made networks like Ellevate Network or Levo League, which are broad-based women’s networks.
FORGET THE MENTOR AND GET YOURSELF A SPONSOR
Well, here’s quite a stat: women have twice as many mentors as men do, and half as many sponsors. What’s the difference? Mentors answer your questions, take you to lunch once a quarter, and help you reflect on your own work. Sponsors? They fight for your seat at the table. Bring your name up in conversation when senior management is at Capital Grille for Friday afternoon lunch.
Sponsors push for you to get promoted and have a vested interest in your success. The key point here: your list of potential sponsors should certainly include women, but should include guys too. There’s no magic secret to getting a sponsor, except to get out there and start building relationships, do great work, and ask for advice and help when appropriate. Then at some point, ask if they would be comfortable proposing you for a board seat or writing you a recommendation. It is that step that moves someone from the mentor corner to the sponsor corner.
BUILD A “PERSONAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS”
This is your long-term career squad. It’s made up of folks you’ve developed relationships with over the course of your career and studies. Imagine yourself as a small enterprise, and they’re advisors looking to help grow the business. This can be made up of mentors, sponsors, former bosses, etc. Personally, I have a group of folks who are all very different that I run stuff by. For example, after I was booted out of Citi, I asked each of them the open-ended, “What should I do next? What would you do if you were me?” I got some very different answers, and some were things I had honestly never thought about. Another example is before I started Ellevest, I went to each of them and ran the exact idea by them. Some said “That’s great,” others asked “Have you thought about this?,” and still others, “You know who would love to fund this idea?” So all kinds of different feedback, all useful.
Be strategic about the people you bring into your circle. For example, if everyone is from your industry and function, you’re not going to get much diversity of thought. If everyone’s an EVP or an SVP, you’ll miss out on advice from people who are in the trenches. So ask for guidance and feedback from a former colleague from a different industry, ask someone in a different geography, ask an old professor, or an alumnus of your school. And above all else, ask people you can trust.
PERHAPS COUNTER-INTUITIVE… BUT BE A MENTOR
It always surprises me when women tell me they’re “not ready” to mentor a more junior colleague. But when they finally take the jump and start investing time in a young up-and-comer, they come back and tell me they hadn’t realized how much they really know. Mentoring naturally causes you to reflect on your younger self and the things you’ve achieved for her. Often times, you’ll realize she’s really frickin’ proud of where you are today.
Plus, you’ll be surprised by how much you’ll learn yourself by mentoring professionals who are younger than you. I honestly don’t think I would have started Ellevest if I hadn’t mentored younger women. I got real insights into what was and wasn’t working for them in the financial services industry, and I also learned a lot about starting businesses from the younger entrepreneurs I mentored.
ASK FOR THE JOB, EVEN IF YOU DON’T THINK YOU’RE FULLY READY
I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had with women who list fifteen reasons they’re ready for the promotion and let just one reason why they don’t feel prepared stop them from going for it. Men, I find, often need just one solid reason to hang their hats on. According to an internal study by Hewlett-Packard, women typically raise their hands for a promotion when they’re 100% ready, whereas men apply when they are just 60% ready.
This was once viewed as a confidence gap, but recent research published by Harvard Business Review found that women hesitate because they view the job descriptions as strict rules. (I’m telling you, if grade school lasted our entire lives, we would be so far in the lead.) In other words, we try to color inside the lines when it comes to taking that next career step. The guys seem to understand the unwritten rule that there’s some wiggle room where undeveloped potential can make up for missing qualifications.
My advice: if you’re interested, just go for it. Odds are you’re more qualified than you think.

This Is All You Have to Do to Get a Top-Management Position
“Female leadership is an imperative for organizations that want to perform at the highest levels. Yet based on the slow rate of progress over the last three years, it will take twenty-five years to reach gender parity at the senior-VP level and more than one hundred years in the C-suite,” a study conducted by McKinsey & Co. and LeanIn.org reports.
Whether you’ve got your eye on that big promotion or you’re pursuing an entrepreneurial venture of your own, making it in today’s business world is no easy task for us women — and while we like to believe that improvements are being made in terms of gender equality in the workplace, we are still long ways away to an even playing field in the workplace.
The good news though is that there are steps you can take today that will help put you at a competitive advantage for that big promotion in the future. The study suggests that one tactic to help women get to the highest levels of their organization is to “create a virtuous cycle of female leadership.” According to the study, this means creating an environment in the office that fosters female leadership. That’s right. The research shows that for gender-equality to happen senior-level women need become more optimistic so they continue to push to reach the highest levels of the organization and serve as positive role models for more junior women.
Women don’t have to be mean, masculine or overly objectified to succeed in a top management position in business: We can be us and we can have it all. Strong businesswomen such as Anna Wintour (Editor-in-chief of Vogue), Indra Nooyi (CEO and chair of PepsiCo) and Arianna Huffington (co-founder of The Huffington Post) have paved the way and shown us that it is possible and highly rewarding for a woman to make it to the C-Suite—we’re all in this together!
As in so many things in life, knowledge is power—so that means we need to understand our finances in order to live the lives we want and deserve. Luckily, Ellevest, a unique digital investment platform for women, launched “The Go-Getter’s Guide To Investing,” a free guide that breaks down investing for a female audience (Yasss!), providing a money cheat sheet for all of us newbies.
“Money is power, independence, freedom, and living the lives that we want — lives that our mothers and grandmothers couldn’t have imagined,” Sallie Krawcheck, co-founder, and CEO of Ellevest tells Style Salute. So, no matter what stage you are in your life, there are ways to take your finances into your own hands.

Fatigued? It Might Have Nothing To Do With How Much You’re Sleeping
Fatigue is a symptom that we all experience at one time or another. Let’s face it, climbing the corporate ladder, crushing glass ceilings, pursuing your education, and juggling a social and professional life are all demanding and can leave us feeling tired and drained. However, it’s important to know when fatigue may be an indication of something more serious. Here, we’ll discuss fatigue as a possible sign of three health concerns, Thyroid Dysfunction, Depression, and Anemia.
Ahead, I get into if, how, and why fatigue can be a possible sign of something more serious ⏤ and what to do if it is.
Is my fatigue related to my Thyroid?
Some questions to ask yourself?
Is your hair falling out?
When I say hair loss we are talking losing a significant amount of hair. We all lose hair when we brush or shower, but if you notice a significant increase in hair loss, or even loss of eyebrow hair, this could be a reason for concern. Blood work may be necessary to determine if your thyroid function is altered.
Are you feeling cold more often than not?
Sensitivity to cold is also something that may be associated with thyroid dysfunction. Again, we are talking a daily sense of being cold when others around you are comfortable. Are you wearing a sweater when your friends, family and coworkers swear to you that the room isn’t cold? This is an issue to discuss with your physician.
Have your periods become irregular?
Irregular periods are often a part of the presentation of thyroid dysfunction. Are you noticing that your periods are coming before or after they should be? Are they lasting longer or shorter than usual? These issues should be discussed with your physician also, because they may be part of the presentation of thyroid dysfunction.
Is my fatigue related to Depression?
Some questions to ask yourself include the following:
Do you feel a decrease in the desire to do things?
A decreased desire to do things that would normally give you a sense of excitement or pleasure may be a part of a larger diagnosis such as depression. If you’ve noticed a gradual or even sudden decrease in desire in your hobbies, or activities please seek the help of a physician to determine if you may be suffering from depression.
Has your appetite changed?
Change in appetite is often an issue for patients suffering from depression. This may cause a lack of desire to eat food. Do you feel that food no longer has taste or no longer appeals to you? Although this could be the cause of many issues, depression needs to be ruled out. Seek a medical professionals guidance regarding changes in appetite. Likewise, if you feel that you’ve been overeating as well as feeling any of the other symptoms we’ve discussed above, make sure to notify your physician.
Is it increasingly difficult to concentrate?
We all struggle with concentration when we are feeling tired. However, if you have noticed difficulty with concentration when watching television, or reading simple text such as a magazine, and this becomes a common occurrence, make sure to mention this to your physician as well.
Is my fatigue caused by underlying Anemia?
Anemia or a low red blood cell count is a medical condition that is closely linked with fatigue. Some questions to ask yourself include the following:
Are you feeling a sense of weakness in addition to your fatigue?
Weakness must be differentiated from fatigue here, Weakness is the sense that you lack muscle strength or ability to do things such as lift an object. Fatigue is more the generalized sense of being tired and may of may not include weakness. This may present as dropping things you’d normally be able to hold without strain, such as dishes, or brushes. If this symptom is present, you need to be evaluated by a physician.
Are you experiencing any dizziness with your Fatigue?
Dizziness is present with more serious levels of anemia. This may occur when you stand from a seated position, or even at rest. This is a serious symptom and must be discussed with your medical provider.
Have you noticed an increased or rapid heart rate associated with the Fatigue?
Increased heart rate is often associated with more serious levels of anemia as well as other serious conditions requiring proper evaluation. If you feel your heart rate is elevated above your normal, (note: an average resting heart rate is somewhere in the range of 55-75 beats per minute and varies based on age and level of conditioning) please notify your physician as soon as possible. If you feel the elevated heart rate is severe or associated with symptoms of dizziness or lightheadedness, do not hesitate to contact Emergency Care.
Remember that regular and consistent evaluations and examinations by your physician are an important tool in maintaining balance as you seek to empower yourself. Mind, Body, and Spirit need equal love and attention. If you’re feeling fatigued and have one or more of the other symptoms we discussed, schedule an appointment with your physician.

The Biggest Money Mistake Women Make and Men Don’t
You’re financially responsible, right? You opened up a bank account when you were young, you’re earning good money and you put a little aside from your paycheck every month — and maybe you even have a side hustle to bring in some additional cash.
You’re doing your personal best to ensure you have a secure financial future, and yet your financial goals for the future still seem like more of a pipe dream than simply a task on your to-do list. Sound familiar? The problem lies in the fact that most of us let our hard earned money sit in the bank when we should actually be investing it.
In fact, of all the assets controlled by women, 71% is in cash — aka not invested And when you leave your savings in cash, you may miss out on market gains that could be earned over time, and even worse — inflation actually lessens your purchasing power.
So, the biggest mistake we women make (and men don’t) is not investing in the first place.
The financial services industry is filled with jargon and complexity, making investing seem scary and maybe even. intimidating. Sallie Krawcheck is looking to change all that with the launch of Ellevest, a investment platform designed specifically for women. “Wall Street over-complicates investing — ETF, mutual fund, managed account, managed futures, large cap value, small cap growth, all that stuff. But we’re a fiduciary — that means we must act in your best interests — so I’m going to make the decision, whether it’s a mutual fund or an ETF or a managed account. I’m not going to bother you with that. That’s not your job. Your job is to go out, earn your money, put a percent in, choose your goals, and then let me do my job,” says Krawcheck. Moral of the story: you should be strategic outside of the office too, and start building wealth.
Any way you look at it, money is power, and right now the truth is men have more of it.
“The importance of it [is] taking care of yourself financially so that you can then change the world. That change can start with our daughters. Our daughters see us on a Saturday afternoon checking our brokerage statement. Our daughters see us getting ready to go into work and ask for the raise. Our daughters see women dealing with money as very normal, which [it] of course was not with my mother and so many of my generation. When women have more money at all levels of society, society benefits,” says Krawcheck.
It’s time to close the gap for good. Sign up with Ellevest today for advice on approaching investing.
