The Secret to Becoming a Wildly Successful Woman

The Life-Changing Habit Successful Women Started in Their 20s

Here’s a fact: The ability to consistently save and invest money is the number one habit practiced by financially successful women – and for good reason.  Sure, the early years of your career require you to stretch a small paycheck across rent, groceries,  social gatherings, and many other priorities. But saving investing is a necessity, for two important reasons: One,  you are going to be responsible for paying for your own retirement. Second, if you don’t start now, achieving financial goals later in life will be far harder.

The good news is that you have a huge investing advantage over people who are older: You have time. Because retirement is four decades away, you can afford to invest in stocks without caring what the market does next month or next year. And thanks to that long time horizon, even small investments will compound immensely.

Consider the numbers: If you invested $3,000 a year beginning today and your funds return a reasonable 6% a year, you would end up with nearly $45,000 in 10 years and nearly $120,000 in 20. After 40 years, you’d have nearly $500,000. Thanks to the miracle of compounding, that sum balloons as you earn interest both on what you contribute and on the interest you’ve been earning. It’s a like a snowball rolling down a hill. The longer the hill, the bigger it gets.

And, if your company matches your 401(k) contributions, you’d only have to save $125 a month to hit that $3,000 a year target.

Unfortunately, the truth is the majority of women aren’t investing their hard-earned cash, and it’s a hugely costly mistake. The recent market lurches can be enough to give any investor pause: Maybe just keep your money in the bank? Nice and safe. Wait to invest. Ok, but.. there’s a price for that safety. That’s according to Sallie Krawcheck, the co-founder and CEO of Ellevest, the only women-focused investment platform. The seasoned Wall Street veteran asserts that the gender investing gap—the notion that women invest less than men—costs women at least $750,000 over the course of their lives. *

And depending on your salary and the market’s performance, the real cost of the investment gap over a 35-year career span could be more than $1 million. (Yes, I said one million).**

But it’s not just the money, it’s also about the financial freedom that comes with having money. Not having as much money as men can keep us in relationships we may not want to stay in, it can also keep us in a job we don’t like, and can cause us to miss out on opportunities (like buying a house or starting a business).

Worried about the volatility of the markets?

The stock market definitely got more volatile in recent weeks … so should we be worried? Krawcheck has some thoughts about how to see the market in this video.Don’t be. Of course, markets can be volatile but research shows that over the long-run—like several decades—staying in the markets will help your money grow. More so than keeping it in cash.

“Right now, we’re in what they’re calling an aging bull market, which means we’re going to see a lot of ups and downs. But over time, companies make money and stocks grow. If you’re someone just starting out in your 20s or 30s, you have plenty of time for that money to grow. Automate it, put it away, don’t look at it. Just leave it there.

This is Why You Should Be Using Setting Powder

This is Why You Should Be Using Setting Powder

The whole idea of getting that natural makeup look is to achieve a radiant face that is prettier than what nature had provided. Rosier lips. Flushed cheeks. Perfect skin that is soft, smooth, and radiant. Long lush lashes. Bigger eyes. The works.

That can be achieved with makeup. The only difference is how obvious do you want it to be that you are wearing makeup?  Ideally, you should look prettier, yet look like you are not wearing any makeup at all. Is that possible? Ironically, it takes the full slew of makeup to look like you aren’t wearing any. The result should be as if you aren’t wearing makeup.

Makeup is all about enhancing your beauty, not detracting from it. Done right, your skin should look radiant, eyes bigger and brighter and lips so much more kissable. Great makeup application does that for you. While setting powder has a bit of a reputation for being. . . well, old-fashioned, the truth is a fine setting powder is every makeup artist secret and there are several good reasons for it.  Most importantly, setting powder sets your foundation and makes it last. Setting Powder can make the skin texture seem finer, as it makes the pores look smaller. Last, but not least, setting powder removes the stickiness created by foundation or concealer. It is very important to ensure that the powder you use does not change the color of your foundation.

Loose Translucent Powder

Loose powder is often the product of choice for professional makeup artists. Most loose translucent powders available are not really translucent as they will contain a small amount of color but generally, a translucent powder will fight less with your foundation than a specific shade. Loose powder has the advantage that it does not build up on the skin and create a heavy, caked look. It is very light and if too much is applied it can easily be dusted away with a large, soft brush.

Pressed Powder

The one distinct advantage of pressed powder is that it is much less messy to carry around in your handbag than loose powder. For this reason, it can sometimes be handy for quick touch-ups during the course of the day. You also generally have a wider range of shades to choose from that is the case with loose powder. Best results will come if you choose a shade as close as possible to the color of your foundation and use very sparingly. A fairly recent development is multi-toned face powder like the Saffron Multi-Toned Pressed Powder. The advantage of this is that it avoids the rather flat, one-dimensional tone that can sometimes result from using conventional tinted pressed powder. Your complexion is not one color all over your face, there is a natural shading that occurs and multi-tone powders aim to mimic this, giving a more natural look. Face powder really can be the finishing touch to your make up so it is worth taking the time to perfect your techniques and trying out several products until you find the one that suits you.

CEO of Hutch Beatrice Fischel-Bock

This Under-30 CEO Shares Her Best Career Advice In Two Sentences

Beatrice Fischel-Bock is a powerhouse when it comes the interior design game, thanks to her success with the launch of Hutch, an innovative home decor app that mixes 3D technology with online shopping to let you virtually decorate your home.

Fischel-Block is somewhat of a rarity in the C-suite world—after realizing the huge potential of 3D interior design, Fischel-Bock launched Hutch (then ZOOM Interiors and Home)  during her senior year at George Washington University.

Since that time has raised a total of $17+ million in funding and was named 2018’s Forbes 30 Under 30 for Retail & E-Commerce

And since one of the best ways to learn tips for succeeding is by seeking the advice from successful, empowering women, I decided to turn to Fischel-Bock to ask her for the best advice she has ever gotten and what she believes effective leadership looks like. So to learn about how to turn your passion into a money-making business,  as well as how to stay focused while getting through your daily to-do list, read through the conversation I had with her below.

Here is the career advice she wants you to know.

SS: What career advice would you give your younger self?

BFB: You have to start by just diving in and going for it. Don’t wait for funding, don’t wait for the right mentor—just start. Your path will begin to reveal itself naturally. I always tell people looking to start a business to print some business cards and buy a domain. Total cost: under $100. This first step helps to make something that is in your head more tangible and real.

STYLE SALUTE: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received? Who was it from?

BEATRICE FISCHEL-BOCK: Do things that scare you (Eleanor Roosevelt). I am a very shy person so most things scare me, especially in my position leading teams and publicly speaking. Although it’s uncomfortable at the time, you learn that you can do anything and that everything gets easier once you try it.

SS: What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made in your career?

BFB: I would have to say that my biggest mistake would have to do with making the wrong hire. Everyone wins when you have the right person doing a job that they excel at.

SS: Who do you look up to? Why is this person inspirational to you?

BFB: My mentor Sean Rad, the founder of Tinder. He, of course, has a lot more experience than me and is very willing to share and teach others. Working so closely with him I’ve found a lot of common themes that have shaped who I am as an entrepreneur. He always tells me to ask questions of everyone. A lot of times, you can get someone to their own conclusion, one that comes from them rather than what’s told to them. That makes the person you’re talking to part of the conversation and they think through it themselves.

[I’m also inspired by] my co-workers. I know how lucky I am to go to work every day working on a mission and a solution that we all feel so passionately about. I can’t think of better inspiration than that.

SS: What has been your biggest learning curve?

BFB: It’s all challenging! That is probably what’s hardest. Learning to deal with the constant ups and downs of running a startup. You have to try and keep an even keel through every challenge that comes your way. Get through it and get ready for the next one.

Starting our journey on Shark Tank was an amazing experience, and has led to so much of what makes us the company we are today- including my 2 other co-founders Ben and Ethan! We’ve definitely had highlights and overcome challenges since then. The challenge to find [a] product-market fit and create a truly simple and affordable interior design product pushed us to launch our latest product, Hutch! The response to our launch was overwhelming in the best way, and was a huge highlight for our team.

SS: What is your daily routine like? Does this attribute to your success?

BFB: I start my day with my dog. We go for a walk without my phone to take a moment to be present and peaceful before the craziness begins. I’ve learned that if I don’t keep myself centered, then I don’t do a good job at work. Once I get home, I’m on email before meditating or going to work out. I think having healthy habits definitely attributes to your success. Rich Barton, the founder of Zillow and Expedia, told me that as an entrepreneur I should train as an athlete. Good sleep, healthy eating habits and not hungover mornings!

SS: What’s one thing you wished all millennials knew about starting a career?

BFB: It doesn’t come easily! The age of oversharing and social media doesn’t bode well for communicating the hard stuff, the less glamorous stuff. We need to know that starting a career is not easy. It’s a lot of hard work and putting in the time.

6 Ways to Support Women Leaders With Your Purchasing Power

6 Ways to Support Women Leaders With Your Purchasing Power

You’ve heard it before: Money is power. If you’re going to spending your hard-earned money, why not make a statement with your purchasing power?

A great way to empower other women is to spend or invest your dollars in companies with female leaders.

Why are females in leadership positions so important? Because these companies are more likely to hire more women, pay women fairly, and address fair gender dynamics. I once worked at a company that purchased company t-shirts in male sizes only and stored the open box of swag in the men’s bathroom – so of course, only the men got shirts. You think a female CEO will let that fly? Plus, studies show businesses with women leaders generate greater revenue and decrease turnover.

Lean In and McKinsey came out with a report stating, “Nearly 50 percent of men think women are well represented in leadership in companies where only one in ten senior leaders is a woman.”

Listen, cowboys, that 10 percent is really not going to cut it. It’s no wonder the same report found that “men are less committed to gender diversity efforts.”

In order to close the gender gap at work, women need to be at the top, to bring light to diversity efforts where men have been really dim. Collectively, we can show our support towards companies who realize that having women in management is beneficial for everyone.

Ellevest Impact Portfolios
PHOTO: Ellevest

Last week, I went an event called Seat @ the Table, held by Costanoa Ventures at LinkedIn. One of the inspiring speakers was CEO Tracy Young of PlanGrid. When asked how she built a successful company in the male-dominated construction industry, she replied, “I’ve been lucky to have strong female role models in both construction and technology. Because I saw women in positions of leadership, I said to myself: If they could do it, I could do it too.” The more women we see in leadership roles, the more attainable it is for all of us.

Increasing the number of women in management also expands the network of female mentors. For me, it’s truly wonderful having female allies. I turn to my friends with questions I may not share with male colleagues: What happens when a junior on your team doesn’t respect you as a female manager? What is it like returning to work after maternity leave? What do you wear to an important client meeting at a baseball game? Having more women in leadership increases our shared knowledge database.

And guess what? Women make awesome products. Some of my personal favorites products just so happen to be the creation of some badass female bosses.
